COMM 220: Visual Storytelling Through Composite Imagery

In COMM 220, students explore elements of visual storytelling, transforming short stories or songs into complex, multi-layered narratives using advanced digital techniques. This project pushes the boundaries of traditional compositing, encouraging students to explore a wide range of digital media.

Students select a short story or song as their inspiration, then create a comprehensive visual representation. The project's open-ended nature allows for diverse interpretations and outputs, including 2D, 3D, video, and conceptual RPG elements and packaging design.

A key aspect of this project is that students create all content themselves. This approach ensures a deep engagement with various aspects of digital media creation, fostering a well-rounded skill set.

The digital media industry is vast and constantly evolving. This project's flexibility allows students to focus on areas that align with their career interests, whether in game design, film production, advertising, or other digital media fields. By solving a complex visual problem, students prepare themselves for the diverse challenges they'll face in their professional careers.

Composite techniques can be used to create "impossible" images, such as a person holding the moon or standing on water, allowing photographers to bring surreal visions to life.
