COMM220 Compositing: Bridging Individual and Collaborative Expertise with Storytelling
At the core of COMM 220: Compositing is the belief that effective communication and teamwork are essential for success in the media industry. This unique course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the production pipeline through a two-part approach.
In the first half, students explore various forms of compositing, including 2D, 3D, video, and audio mixing with visual elements. This versatility allows them to showcase their creativity and technical expertise while gaining proficiency in industry-specific skills. We explore foundational and emerging concepts. The course leans into interactive and immersive media.
The second half of the semester is dedicated to a collaborative project, simulating a professional production environment. Students form a production company, establish roles and responsibilities, and work together to bring a single, cohesive project to life. From ideation and pre-production to execution and post-production, they navigate the challenges and triumphs of teamwork. Throughout the project, students develop invaluable skills in project management, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication. They create a rubric to evaluate individual contributions, fostering accountability and a culture of constructive feedback.
