SPE National Conference
The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) National Conference was an experience filled with inspiring presentations, meaningful connections, and exciting new beginnings. As the newly appointed Chair for the South Central region, I had the privilege of connecting with colleagues from across the country, sharing ideas, and envisioning the future of photographic education in our region.
The conference reinforced something I've always believed: creating community within your profession is not just beneficial—it's essential. The conversations in hallways between sessions often proved as valuable as the formal presentations themselves. These connections build bridges between institutions and individuals, creating pathways for students and opportunities for collaboration that wouldn't otherwise exist.
Watching educators from diverse backgrounds and institutions come together around shared passions reminded me why organizations like SPE matter. We're not just teaching photography; we're nurturing a community of visual thinkers and creators who will shape how our society sees and understands the world.
Another Ben Hickey CEPA Gallery connection. Its like degrees of Kevin Bacon but for photography
Amanda, Immediate Past Chair
A special highlight was spending time with Amanda, Professor at Stephen F. Austin State University and our outgoing South Central Chair. Her leadership has strengthened our regional chapter immensely, and I'm honored to continue building on the foundation she established.
It was particularly meaningful to see one of my former students who is now completing her BFA at SFA under Amanda's guidance. Watching her growth as an artist and seeing how she's thriving in her program brings everything full circle. These student journeys between our institutions exemplify the importance of the bridges we build as educators.
Frank Hamrick, Professor of the Year
The conference also celebrated Frank Hamrick, who received well-deserved recognition as Professor of the Year. Frank has been influential in both my academic and professional art career, serving as a mentor and inspiration. His dedication to traditional processes and thoughtful approach to image-making continues to shape not only my work but the work of countless students.
I've had several students transfer into Frank's program over the years, and each has flourished under his guidance. His teaching philosophy emphasizes both technical excellence and conceptual depth—a balance that produces not just skilled photographers but thoughtful visual artists. @frankhamrick

Portfolio Throwdown and 2025 Conference
The energy of the national conference will continue in our region with two exciting upcoming events. First, we're hosting a Portfolio Throwdown in Fort Worth—an opportunity for students to receive feedback from professionals and educators in a supportive environment. These review sessions are invaluable for emerging photographers, providing both constructive critique and networking opportunities.
Even more exciting, Fort Worth will host the 2025 Fall South Central Conference. Planning is already underway for what promises to be an engaging gathering of educators, students, and photography enthusiasts from across our region. The conference will feature portfolio reviews, presentations, and workshops that showcase the diverse approaches to photographic education in the South Central states.
Returning from the conference, I'm energized by the possibilities ahead for our regional chapter and for photographic education more broadly. The medium continues to evolve, but what remains constant is the power of images to communicate, challenge, and connect.
