COMM 160: Facing Fears - A Photographic Journey of Self-Discovery
The "Facing Fears" project, generously shared by educator Andy Bloxham eight years ago, has become a cornerstone of our curriculum, serving as a gateway to meaningful and personal image-making. Students are tasked with creating a photograph that represents a fear, concern, or personal challenge they face. This open-ended prompt allows for a wide range of interpretations, from literal depictions to abstract representations.
By asking students to confront and visualize their fears, this assignment breaks down barriers between classmates, encourages empathy and understanding, and demonstrates the power of photography as a medium for self-expression.
This assignment has proven invaluable in helping me understand the diverse perspectives and experiences of my students. It provides a unique opportunity to tailor teaching approaches to individual needs and concerns.
The "Facing Fears" assignment not only introduces students to the expressive potential of photography but also creates a foundation of trust and openness that enhances the entire learning experience. It reminds us that at its core, photography is not just about technical proficiency, but about connecting with ourselves and others through visual storytelling.
